Teen Counselor Applications Now Avaliable

If you are age 14-18 and want to supervise and be a role model for younger children in a camp setting, we have an opportunity for you! We are now accepting applications for 4-H Junior Camp Counselors and encourage you to submit your packet before January 29th. Camp counselors are key to our camp success and we need males and females to fill available positions. Camp will be held June 13-17, 2010, in Front Royal. Cost is only $100 for the week and includes all transportation, room, and board. Visit http://madison4h.pbworks.com to download an application packet.

2010 Fair Theme Announced

"Carnival Lights and Country Nights" will be the theme of the 2010 Madison County Fair. Use this as a springboard for planning your stall displays, animal names, etc. DISCLAIMER: ANY LIGHTS USED IN THE BARN MUST BE BATTERY POWERED.

New 4-H Goat Club Organizing in January

An organizational meeting will be held on January 12, 2010; 7:00 pm at the Madison Extension Office. If you are interested in goats please come and check us out!

Anglers Sports Show at OCHS

OCHS 4-H and Jr. B.A.S.S. Anglers invite you to save the date for their annual sporting show, to be held March 6 and 7 at Orange County High School. There will be many vendors related to all things fishing and gaming, as well as fun booths for the kids and plenty of educational opportunities. Make plans to join them!

Steer Weigh-In on Saturday Jan 9, 2010

Members planning to show or sell a steer at the Madison County Fair this summer are reminded of the annual Steer Weigh-in this Saturday, January 9, 2010, 9 a.m. at Tucker Livestock. All youth planning to tag a steer must have a completed 4-H enrollment packet on file in order to be eligible to nominate a steer.

Citizen Washington Focus Registration Now Open

Have you ever wanted to get a more in-depth look at our nation's government? Take the chance to live and work in Washington, D.C. for one week this summer through 4-H's Citizenship Washington Focus. All 50 states participate in this program, and Virginia's assigned week will be July 11-17, 2010. The cost is $724 per participant, but scholarships are available. Mary Quinn Eakins and Rebekah Yowell both attened last year and reported it was an awesome experience!

4-H Day with the Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards (NBA team) are hosting 4-H Day on Saturday, January 30th, when they play the New York Knicks at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. If your club or family is interested in participating, please contact the Extension Office. We then have to relay how many participants we will have to the unit office that is coordinating Virginia's participation. While in Washington, other cool things to do/see include touring the National Mall, visiting ESPN Zone, and participating in pre-game activities at the Verizon Center. (Contact with NBA players are possible, but not guaranteed.) Let us know if you're interested!

Statewide 4-H Teen Weekend in March

All teen 4-H'ers (14-18) are invited to attend the annual statewide Teen Weekend. The event will be held March 5-7, 2010, at Mountain Lake Resort in Giles County (approx. 3 hours from Orange). The cost is $45 for the weekend, and scheduled activities include a dinner etiquette workshop complete with filet mignon (!), communication etiquette seminar, nature classes, and swing dancing. The event is planned by the State 4-H Cabinet, so please participate in what your peers have made possible for you. Space is limited to the first 90 registrants; contact the Extension Office for more info and/or to request a scholarship in order to participate.
